[Glen Rose Medical Center] awarded for efforts to improve rural stroke care
The American Heart Association’s Get With The Guidelines® – Stroke Rural Recognition SILVER award recognizes efforts to address the unique health needs of rural communities
SOMERVELL COUNTY— People who live in rural communities live an average of three years fewer than urban counterparts and have a 40% higher likelihood of developing heart disease and face a 30% increased risk for stroke mortality — a gap that has grown over the past two decades. , Glen Rose Medical Center is committed to changing that.
For efforts to optimize stroke care and eliminate rural health care outcome disparities, Glen Rose Medical Center has received the American Heart Association’s Get With The Guidelines® – Stroke Rural Recognition SILVER award.
The American Heart Association, the world’s leading nonprofit organization focused on heart and brain health for all, recognizes the importance of health care services provided to people living in rural areas by rural hospitals that play a vital role in initiation of timely evidence-based care. For that reason, all rural hospitals participating in Get With The Guidelines – Stroke are eligible to receive award recognition based on a unique methodology focused on early acute stroke performance metrics.
“We are proud that our team at Glen Rose Medical Center is being recognized for the important work we do every day to improve the lives of people in Somervell County who are affected by stroke, giving them the best possible chance of recovery and survival,” said Michael Honea. “As a hospital in a rural community, we deal with characteristics, such as extended interfacility transportation times, and limited staffing resources. We’ve made it a goal to make sure those hurdles do not affect the standard of care our stoke patients receive.
“Rural communities deserve high quality stroke care. I’m proud of our team for their commitment to stroke care excellence and this achievement.”
The award recognizes hospitals for their efforts toward acute stroke care excellence demonstrated by composite score compliance to guideline-directed care for intravenous thrombolytic therapy, timely hospital inter-facility transfer, dysphagia screening, symptom timeline and deficit assessment documentation, emergency medical services communication, brain imaging and stroke expert consultation.
“Patients and health care professionals in Somervell County face unique health care challenges and opportunities,” said Karen E. Joynt Maddox, M.D., MPH, co-author on the American Heart Association’s presidential advisory on rural health. “Glen Rose Medical Center has furthered this important work to improve care for all Americans, regardless of where they live.”

Happy 2025, it is going to be a great one!

We had a busy year at Glen Rose Medical Center, we hit the ground running at the beginning of 2024, and we finished it strong.

Adding programs and technology updates takes research, discussions, and implantation. We really think about the community and what we can do as caregivers so that our patients have the best possible outcome when it comes to their healthcare.

We celebrated the one- year anniversary of our Hospitalist Program with Dr. Hutchinson and Dr. Borgfeld. The hospitalist program provides a higher level of care to patients that might have had to be transferred to the metroplex, the hospitalist works with your primary care physician to ensure you have the personal experience that makes being a patient at GRMC special.

Glen Rose Medical Center also added to our Cardiology Department, Cardiologist Dr. Daniel Jipesu, DO. Dr. Jipsesu sees patients the second Friday of each month at Glen Rose Medical Center Specialty clinic and sees patients the second Thursday of each month at our Pecan Plantation Specialty Clinic. We are happy to expand this service to our heart patients.

In March we announced our partnership with Urology Partners of North Texas, adding Dr. Zain Hyder to the staff at Glen Rose Healthcare Inc. Urology services were a much-needed service in Somervell and the surrounding area. Dr. Hyder’s addition to the clinic and hospital was an overwhelming success.

The Wound Care Program has also seen an increase in the number of patients. We work with your primary care physician and/or home health provider to improve the outcome of non- progressing wounds.

Last year we mentioned the Dr. Roger E. Marks Healthcare Foundation raising funds for a Wellness Center, this year the Dr. Roger E. Marks Healthcare Foundation gifted the funds necessary to start on the Wellness Center project. The current location of Outpatient Therapy has been under construction for several months adding all new equipment, expanding the gym area and dedicating a classroom for education, you should join us for our Open House January 15th 4:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m., we really want to show off.

The largest addition to the hospital was the announcement of a new in-house large bore (opening) MRI machine. The MRI machine is the latest technology available in the area. The large bore opening helps patients that are claustrophobic with the anxiety of being in a smaller opening MRI machine. Our new MRI machine is one of the fastest most accurate scanning machines available today. This new service provides clearer images in half the time in most cases. We are so proud of this new addition, the feedback we have received from patients as well as physicians has been overwhelming. Not to mention we have the best MRI tech in the area! Randall Ratliff is our MRI technician; he is truly the go to for all things MRI at Glen Rose Medical Center.

This year we have started some behind-the-scenes updating as well. We have updated the lighting in the hospital and clinic to be more energy efficient, we have already seen a return in energy savings. We are in the process of updating the entire HVAC units in the hospital and clinics, this is not only an energy saving upgrade as well as patient comfort and temperature control in the operating rooms.

We are also making a few updates to our website (you might see a few familiar faces). We are also making moves on social media platforms as we update with new services to better inform people in the tri-county area. Watch for us.

After much research, the hospital is updating to a new Electronic Health Record system. This new system will allow a much more efficient registration process, access to electronic health records from other facilities, allowing for more readily available information to our providers. This is a very lengthy process, and we hope to “go live” in August 2025.

We have a few exciting announcements coming in early 2025. We cannot wait to share them with you.

We look forward to the new year, and we wish you a very happy and healthy 2025.

We want to take a moment to spotlight one of our own. We like to think of our team members as extended family and want to congratulate Catalina Sanchez. Catalina is a 2022 GRHS graduate and the daughter of Ben and Christina Sanchez. Christina, an LVN has been a loyal employee of this community since 2008.

Every year TORCH (Texas Organization of Rural & Community Hospitals) notifies all rural Texas hospitals of scholarship opportunities for those pursuing or advancing their careers in the medical field. TORCH partnered with the Lindsey Horton Memorial Scholarship Fund to expand the scholarship beyond the Permian Basin region. This year Catalina applied and was awarded the scholarship. The scholarship is a $5,000.00 scholarship that is only awarded to ten qualified applicants from rural Texas communities.

Catalina is a 2024 Graduate of Hill College with an Associate Degree in Science, where she played softball. Catalina is now attending Tarleton State University pursuing a degree in Kinesiology. After graduating Tarleton State University, she plans on studying Radiology Technology.

Congratulations Catalina, Ben and Christina. Well done.

About the Lindsey Horton Memorial Scholarship

Lindsey Horton was a registered nurse at Permian Regional Medical Center in Andrews, Texas. She worked in the Surgery Department and completed two cases the morning of August 10, 2020. She took a break and went to the bathroom. A while later her co-workers began looking for her. The bathroom was locked, and they could not get in. They called Maintenance to pull the core of the lock. When they opened the door, they found Lindsey’s lifeless body on the floor. The cause of death was determined to be “Sudden Cardiac Death due to Mitral Valve Prolapse”. She went into a fatal arrhythmia, probably ventricular fibrillation. The Lindsey Horton Memorial Scholarship Fund has been started in honor and memory of Lindsey and will provide scholarships to nursing students and other healthcare fields so that out of tragedy can come some good.

Welcome Dr. Daniel Jipescu DO, Interventional Cardiologist. He likes to go by Dr. Daniel. Dr. Daniel moved from Eastern Europe more than two decades ago and attended medical school in Long Island, New York with his dream of becoming an Interventional Cardiologist. There he learned about the importance of advocacy for patients’ health care policies and participated in multiple local and national conferences. After meeting many friendly people in Texas during his search for the best training place and falling in love with the idea of living here he moved to DFW with his family. He was fortunate to find amazing supporting mentors and a great hospital staff. Everyone around him also found Dr. Daniel to be a very kind and passionate person about his patients. We are happy to announce we are nearing the one – year anniversary of our Hospitalist Program with Dr. Hutchinson and Dr. Borgfeld, and our Swing Bed Program is also growing.

The construction will take six months to complete, during the construction phase one of our long tenure team members will also begin classes to operate the new MRI. The Air RECON DL MRI will provide a more pleasant patient experience, with larger “bore” (opening) to help with the claustrophobic feeling, faster and clearer images. We cannot wait for the grand opening. More to come as construction progresses.

Glen Rose Medical Center has also added to our Cardiology Department, we are happy to announce Cardiologist Dr. Daniel Jipesu, DO. Welcome Dr. Zain Hyder.

Dr. Hyder’s father instilled a deep love for medicine in his son. “My dad is an internal medicine doctor,” he reveals. “He was a big influence on my decision to enter medicine. In fact, I don’t think I ever didn’t know I was going into medicine. I was exposed to it at such a young age as I grew up in Tulsa, Oklahoma. As part of Islamic community, my father opened a free clinic in the city’s Mosque to serve the community. I knew I wanted to also do something to help people.”

After completing his undergraduate degree in biology at the University of Oklahoma, Dr. Hyder attended OU College of Medicine. He gravitated toward urology early on.

“Urology is one of the great surgical fields,” he says. “You can truly get to know your patients, have long-term connections, and take care of them throughout their whole lives. When someone entrusts me with their care, I always keep in mind that I may be speaking with someone who has just worked up enough courage to talk about a very private health issue for the first time. In that moment, I just want to make them feel at ease so we can have a candid conversation.”

Dr. Hyder is particularly interested in men’s health issues—especially those related to prostate cancer survivorship. “Treating erectile dysfunction and urinary incontinence after prostate cancer surgery was a big part of my training, so anything I can do to help men improve their quality of life and relationships post cancer treatment is very rewarding.

“I was very lucky to train in one of the few facilities in the nation, Baylor Scott and White, that specializes in advanced minimally invasive procedures for enlarged prostates. There, I learned to perform Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate (HoLEP). The procedure offers patients the most long-lasting relief of urinary symptoms with minimal discomfort, and the shortest recovery and catheter time.”

He also treats men and women for painful kidney stones and hematuria (blood in the urine).

In joining Urology Partners of North Texas, Dr. Hyder has found a practice of like-minded, patient-first physicians who genuinely care more about medicine than about being a cog in a corporate machine. “That was something I’ve been exposed to from friends with jobs as hospital-employed physicians. It’s great for some people, but I was really looking forward to developing a sense of community with my patients and colleagues—a community like the one I grew up in. I want to be someone people can reach out to if they ever have issues in urology.”

When Dr. Hyder isn’t caring for his patients, the passionate Formula 1 fan enjoys spending time with his family and traveling with his wife (a neurologist) and checking off destinations on their bucket list. A tour of Asia may soon be on their itinerary. “I like to learn about different cultures,” he admits. “My grandfather runs a company in China, and I’ve spent a few summers with him growing up. I think it is important to get to know people from all different walks of life and make sure I can provide them with the best possible care.”

Here is the list of his services provided:

  • BPH,
  • Comprehensive Care for Disorders of the Prostate,
  • Kidneys, Bladder,
  • Male Genital Tract,
  • Enlarged Prostate,
  • Erectile Dysfunction,
  • Incontinence,
  • Kidney Stones,
  • Laser TURPS for Enlarged Prostate,
  • Minimally invasive BPH treatments

Dr. Hyder will begin seeing patients in Glen Rose Wednesday April 17, 2024, and will see patients the third Wednesday of the month moving forward. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Hyder call 254-897-2202.
